CBD is growing daily in being the wellness choice for countless consumers throughout the United States. With these consumers finding positive results for themselves, it only makes sense that they would ask if this plant compound could have a similar positive result for their furry family friend. Dogs and cats, much like we humans, can deal with issues from stressors to age and conditions associated with them both. Could CBD be a choice for your pet, too?
As we know, the Endocannabinoid System (a neuromodulatory system discovered in 1990) is in mammals, so that means that they have one, too. This is the system that works with the plant compound and allows it into the body to do what it is going to do. Does it work the same in pets?
In the 2018 study Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Clinical Efficacy of Cannabidiol Treatment in Osteoarthritic Dogs, several schools of veterinary science worked together to monitor how dogs with Osteoarthritis fared with CBD oil versus placebo. The “randomized placebo-controlled, veterinarian, and owner blinded, cross-over study” pitted two different dosing amounts of CBD oil versus placebo. This study utilized the administration of 2 mg/kg (of body weight) of CBD twice daily can help “increase comfort and activity in dogs with OA.”
Ultimately, their results stated that “clinically, canine brief pain inventory and Hudson activity scores showed a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity with CBD oil. Veterinary assessment showed decreased pain during CBD treatment. No side effects were reported by owners.”
If your furry friend is feline, Dr. Gary Richter, a holistic veterinarian and owner and medical director of Montclair Veterinary Hospital and Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland, California, told Pet MD that “CBD oil is generally safe for cats” and that the main concern is that there is a difference in products and dosing.
In states that do allow for High THC Cannabis (select states), marijuana toxicity in household pets is an issue on the rise. With them sneaking into bags of legal High THC gummies or other edibles, the result for them is not processed the same as humans. Plus, a large dosing of a bag of treats is guaranteed to not be fun for anyone - human or pet.
However, that is not what is being seen in choosing CBD for pets as, like in humans, it is not a psychotropic response that is looked for but one that is linked to wellness, mobility or similar issues. Because of this differentiation, Power Biopharms pet oils and treats are made without THC, ensuring only the Cannabidiol (CBD) cannabinoid is present.
Is CBD something you're considering for your pet? As with humans, it is a good idea to talk to the doctor first so ask your vet how they feel adding plant-based wellness compounds may affect current routines that they have set.
Start with a small amount and be aware of weight and CBD amount. The Endocannabinoid System, no matter the creature it is in, is sensitive to change and it is best to start with the lowest amount and increase as necessary.
